#3/63 of the 2020 @Michelinguide “Bib Gourmand” (“good quality, good value cooking”, aka affordable!) Manhattan NYC restaurants : MaLa Project — spicy Chinese food! This type of Chinese cooking is known for its use of Sichuan peppercorn which has a “ma la” (numbing/tingling spicy) effect. It’s not burning spicy like chili peppers or fragrant like black pepper, it’s like a tingly dry heat that gives you cottonmouth like you gargled with some slightly anesthetic mouthwash. We had the signature “dry pot”, where you select your ingredients such as various meats and veggies and they stir-fry it with a little of their house sauce (a salty garlic sauce with mala spice and red chilis) - we are not spicy people so we got “mild” and that was more like “medium” spicy enough for me (one can also get no spice, spicy, or super spicy!). It was fresh, good and addicting, if a touch too salty. It also wasn’t too expensive. We also got some plum sauce ribs (good flavor sauce but the meat was a bit dry), and purple rice (like a chewy wild or black rice, cool-looking but meh). Oh and $10 happy hour lychee mojitos🍹. The restaurant itself was nice upscale-casual, not too busy at 6 but by the time we left at 7 it was packed and a line out the door. Location: EV and Midtown (we went to the latter). Average entree cost: $15. Taste: 8/10. Overall experience: 8/10. ...
I’ve made a public Yelp bookmark collection of the 63 Manhattan restaurants (including some second locations) if you want to try them yourself at https://www.yelp.com/collection/odSTlQaUQgK7pxhwaVHxUw?utm_content=Collections&utm_source=ishare (fyi the link sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t, depending on the Yelp servers)

n.b. The website lists 64 restaurants in Manhattan, but Ammazzacaffe is actually in Brooklyn, so it’s really 63.
