If I had to choose one bit of advice that sounds super simple and is super complicated in practice, it's "follow your heart". Should you date this girl? Follow your heart! Should you move abroad? Follow your heart! Is this the right job for you? Follow your heart, follow your heart, just follow your heart already.
Well, have you ever wondered HOW to follow your heart? And did your heart ever tell you to punch the person who keeps telling you to follow your heart? I know mine did.
For some reason, people often equal "follow your heart" to "follow your gut feeling". You guys, these are two COMPLETELY different things. Your gut feeling is quite literally influenced by animalistic emotions. It can be in knots over (completely irrational) stress and fear. It can draw on the almighty power of butterflies when you're in love. It can mess with your head when you're ill. In short - it's not very reliable. Unlike your heart.
What makes a heart a heart (we're talking about a symbolic heart here, not your physical one) is your capacity to love. To love others, to love yourself, to love your life. And that's the key secret of following your heart... All too often I see people try to follow their heart without knowing what they love. Guys, that's not how this works. If you want to follow your capacity for love, there's basically two paths. Path 1 is for enlightened people: just love everything without exceptions (and then it really does not matter what choice you make) OR figure out the things you love and base your choices on that.
Want to spend your days with your friends and family in nature? Trust me when I tell you an office job for 60 hours a week is not going to contribute to that vision. Want to experience multiple romantic connections simultaneously? Maybe don't get engaged to that guy that's only interested in monogamy. Want to spend the majority of your time travelling the world? Then why would you buy a house you're not even allowed to rent out?
Once you know what you want your life to look like, it becomes so much simpler to choose what you want to do. To follow your heart. (Tbc in comments)
