In the course of a single day, it is entirely possible that you might find me...
• scouring the scientific literature using Northwestern University’s most powerful search engines. • consulting my favorite deck of oracle cards.
Why? Because here’s what I know for sure. This world of ours is complex, and I know I need a lot of different pathways to point me toward clarity. I have long since traded my cleverness for curiosity. The older I get, the less tightly I hold to any one system of beliefs or methods. I see value everywhere. Also, having a best friend who is a deliciously gifted shaman keeps my perspective wide af!
Let’s talk EPISTEMOLOGY, a fancy word that invites us to consider how we know what we know. Here in the West we have elevated the eff out of the scientific method... the quest for truth and objectivity, the researcher and the subject. This way of knowing is essential. It is necessary but not sufficient. What other paths toward knowing are there? Intuition, sensing, asking for guidance and discernment, collective wisdom. Yesss!! I’m also here for this! These epistemologies have historically been associated with the feminine... and there for devalued, especially in the west.
Can we envision a world that makes space for both intuition and evidence, both emotion and reason, both sensing and knowing?
I remember giving a talk and a man approaching me after. He lamented the fact that he’s all logic and his wife is all intuition. He felt inadequate in the face of her powers and her deep trust in herself. I invited a reframe ‘cuz therapists LOVE to invite a reframe!! (Reframe= a different way of looking at something) I said, “Wow! It sounds like you two are a POWER COUPLE! Between her feeling and your thinking, y’all have got your bases covered!” He smiled and headed back to his lady-love with a bit of swagger in his step.
Here’s to knowing our own and each other’s superpowers. Here’s to celebrating diversity in epistemology. There’s plenty of space for all of us! #lovingbravely #iamtakingsexyback
