#flashbackfriday to everyone’s favourite chonky little waddler!
You can really see his tell-tale signs of hypothyroidism here. The wide body and head, the short legs, the squashed face, and just look at those bowed back legs.
Nothing about his shape was “normal” for a young kitten.
Once he began his thyroid medication, his body began to grow into more of a normal cat look. It’s crazy how much the T4 levels can affect the physical appearance and development, isn’t it?
While hypothyroidism is rare in cats, it CAN happen! Much to the disbelief of some involved in veterinary medicine, unfortunately.
If there’s anything to take away from Leo’s story, it is that persistence is KEY! I knew from the moment I saw him that something was different. He was seen by a vet a couple of times, who just insisted that he was fine. In my gut I knew that something wasn’t right, so I took him to a different place who managed to diagnose and treat his condition.
The bottom line is - if I had listened to the other vets who saw him, and just accepted that he didn’t have development problems, he either would have been euthanised by them because there’s “nothing they can do”, or he would have suffered and perhaps died from his symptoms.
So if you feel that something isn’t right with your fosters or pets, despite being told they are fine, ALWAYS seek a second or third or fourth opinion. Maybe one of them will find something that the others are missing.
Leo was wide, round, short legs, and not developing. His teeth were not coming in, and he had intermittent constipation. All of these are signs of the condition.
As a lot of vets know all about hypERthyroidism, but are unfamiliar with hypOthyroidism in cats, checking the T4 levels isn’t always suggested by them. If you even think that your cat or kitten has anything remotely similar to Leo, just suggest getting a full blood panel to at least rule it out.
